What are our 2018 Champions League last 16 tips, then?
Tuesday, February 13
Basel v Manchester City
Swiss Super League side Basel have a history of proving tough for Premier League opposition, but it’s a stretch to imagine their encounters with Manchester City will be anything but routine for Pep Guardiola’s team.
The betting agrees as the Etihad outfit are long odds-on to progress from this tie.
Paddy Power go 4/9 that City win the first leg in Switzerland; so, given their massive Premier League lead and record for consecutive victories, they look like doing the business.
Betway, meanwhile, are evens that the Citizens score in both halves in Basel.
Juventus v Tottenham
If Spurs can hold Champions League holders Real Madrid to a draw in the Bernabeu, win the reverse fixture at Wembley and do a group stage double over Borussia Dortmund, then Mauricio Pochettino should fancy his chances of toppling Turin titans Juventus.
BetVictor go 5/4 that Tottenham advance from this two-leg tussle with the Old Lady.
On the pick of their form, meanwhile, Spurs also deserve a double chance punt to win or draw in Italy at 4/5 with Paddy Power.
Juve, twice Champions League finalists in the last three seasons, command respect, though, and are evens to take a lead to Wembley.
Wednesday, February 14
Real Madrid v PSG
Los Blancos battled the Parisians in the group stage two seasons ago, drawing away before a narrow win in the Bernabeu.
PSG boss Unai Emery has to knock out the Champions League holders and managed wins over Real twice when in charge of Sevilla (2013-16) and Valencia (2008-12), and once at Almeria (2007/08).
That history, plus Emery’s superb record in European competition and the presence of Neymar, is enough to make PSG narrow 4/6 favourites for the tie with BetVictor.
The same bookmaker says Zinedine Zidane’s Madrid are a top-price 11/10 to make the quarter-finals.
Porto v Liverpool
The Dragons of Portugal, Porto, have never beaten Liverpool in four previous meetings.
Anfield outfit the Reds drew twice in Oporto and then went on to beat this opposition on Merseyside.
A first-leg draw at Porto is a best-price 5/2 punt with BetVictor.
Given their wealth of attacking talent – and provided they keep hold of Philippe Coutinho in January – Liverpool are odds-on at 2/5 with the same bookmaker to advance from this tie.
Tuesday, February 20
Bayern Munich v Besiktas
Bundesliga big boys Bayern Munich are a best-price 1/5 with betway to qualify from their tie with Turkish giants Besiktas.
These two met in the group stage back in 1997 and Bayern beat Besiktas 2-0 home and away.
A similar scoreline in their first leg encounter at the Allianz Arena is a top-price 11/2 with BetVictor.
With Besiktas such big outsiders for a win in Munich (16/1) and to progress (9/2), the tie looks Jupp Heynckes’ for the taking.
Chelsea v Barcelona
What Champions League history there is between 2012 winners Chelsea and five-time competition victors Barcelona.
Their European record is locked together on five wins apiece and five draws.
Four of the last five fixtures between the Blues and Barca have finished level, so it’s 12/5 with Paddy Power that the first leg is drawn.
A draw no bet on the hosts at Stamford Bridge, meanwhile, is a 7/5 chance with BetVictor.
Wednesday, February 21
Shakhtar Donetsk v Roma
Ukrainian side Shakhtar knocked Roma out at this stage of the Champions League in 2011.
A repeat of that is 6/4 with betway, with the Giallorossi odds-on with BetVictor at a best-price 8/15.
Paddy Power’s 7/4 price about a Shakhtar first leg win in Ukraine – where Roma have lost their two previous visits also appeals.
The 15/4 on offer at BetVictor for a third victory to nil for Shakhtar in Donetsk cannot be ignored either.
Sevilla v Manchester United
Last year’s Europa League winners Manchester United meeting that competition’s most successful side Sevilla for the first time in the Champions League.
Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho has lost just one of eight career clashes with Andalusia outfit Sevilla and won the rest – when in charge of Real Madrid (2010-13).
The Special One’s Bernabeu boys recorded back-to-back 6-2 away victories at one stage, so his Man Utd side are 7/5 chances with Paddy Power to defeat Sevilla in Spain.
United are also 1/3 favourites to reach the quarter-finals.
