Stoke bets cut for relegation and Mark Hughes odds backed for axe
FootieLive reports on Mark Hughes odds in the next Premier League manager to go betting, with Stoke bets also cut for relegation.
Mark Hughes is now odds-on favourite with Paddy Power (from 11/4) in the sack race after Stoke City slumped to a 5-1 Wembley thrashing by Spurs and a late defeat by high-flying Burnley.
The Potters have just one win in their last seven Premier League games, slipping to three points and as few places above the relegation zone.
Stoke bets have in turn been slashed for the drop into 9/2 (from 7/1) with the same bookmaker.
While that suggests the Potters aren’t in immediate danger of losing their top-flight status as several other sides are more fancied, Hughes’ position looks more precarious than ever.
He dismissed increasing speculation after the heavy defeat at Tottenham, however.
Managers “will come under pressure”
“Today wasn’t a good day at the office,” Hughes told talkSPORT. “Prior to this, in the last six games we’re in the top 10 for current form, so it’s what you want to make of it.
“When teams get beat a manager will come under pressure, that’s how it is. When you win, the pressure goes away for a couple of weeks until you lose again. That’s the reality of my position.”
Hughes’ Stoke win record is similar to predecessor Tony Pulis – currently out of work after being sacked by West Bromwich Albion.
On average, however, the Potters have conceded more Premier League goals under Hughes than his fellow Welshman.
They’ve scored a greater average, though, and that equates to almost five points more per season.
With a favourable run of festive fixtures, including consecutive home games with fellow strugglers West Ham United and West Brom, the table might make for betting reading come Christmas.
That is why Stoke bets were as short as 1/20 to stay up with some bookmakers, but they have the current worst Premier League defence and their lowest points tally after 17 games.
